Tom Ward (1910-1986)
Tom Ward, born in 1910 in Clogher, Kilfenora, was a dedicated fiddle player whose love of music and life left a lasting impression on all who knew him. He was one of the talented Ward brothers, alongside Jimmy and Joe, who contributed greatly to the rich musical tradition of North Clare.
Tom married into Willbrook, Corofin, where he settled and became a beloved member of the local community. He was known for playing the fiddle every night of his life, a quiet but unwavering devotion to music that defined his character.
He was connected to the Brass and Reed Band tradition, like many musicians of his generation, and his musical style reflected both the disciplined phrasing of band training and the natural rhythm of Clare fiddle playing. His party piece was the lively and distinctive tune “Belphegor”, which friends and family still recall with a smile.
Tom passed away in 1986, but he is remembered with great fondness.
Thanks to his daughter Mary Browne for all of her help with this project.
