Paddy Kierse (1938-2010)

Paddy Kierse was a much-loved musician, community man, and cultural advocate, originally from Kilnaboy, near Corofin, and later settled in Clarecastle, Co. Clare. A talented tin whistle and flute player, Paddy was deeply involved in the traditional music scene in Clare and beyond.

He worked with Aer Lingus in Shannon and dedicated much of his time to promoting and supporting traditional Irish culture. He was a key figure in Cois na hAbhna, where he was involved in the Summer Seisiún shows for many years, sharing music, stories, and good humour with audiences from near and far.

Paddy was also a long-standing supporter of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann and served as Vice Chairman of An Fleadh Nua, where his legendary fundraising skills kept the festival alive through the lean years of the 1980s and early ’90s — regularly bringing in over £2,000 in sponsorship. He was also part of the fabric of the Friday afternoon session, often joined by his good friend Sonny Murray, anchoring the music with warmth and steady playing.

In his younger years, Paddy played the concert flute, but he remained a fine whistle player throughout his life. He was also a former All-Ireland darts champion, representing Clarecastle with pride.

Paddy passed away in the early hours of February 2nd, 2010. He was fondly remembered not only for his music, but for his generosity, humour, and unwavering dedication to his community and culture. His funeral was held in Clarecastle Church, where many gathered to celebrate the life of a true gentleman of Clare.
