Mickey McCormack (1925-2007)
Mickey McCormack of Tullagha, Kilfenora, was a man who left a lasting impression wherever he went — through his music, his dancing, his humour, and his unmistakable character. Born in 1925, Mickey lived all his 82 years with a spirit that was full of life. He passed away on 19 October 2007, remembered fondly by all who knew him.
A natural singer and great dancer, Mickey was the heart of many a gathering in Kilfenora and beyond. Those who knew him, myself included, remember him as someone who never really changed — his early photos could have been taken yesterday, such was the constancy of his warm and familiar presence.
Mickey married Teasie Foot from Kilnaboy, and together they raised nine children in a home full of laughter, music, and stories. His love of song and rhythm was passed down through the generations. His son, Michael McCormack, is a talented singer, and his grandson Seán McCormack continues that tradition today.
But Mickey’s legacy doesn’t stop at song. He was a founding force behind the Kilfenora Boxing Club, a cherished community initiative that continues to thrive under the guidance of his son, Patrick McCormack.
The musical gene runs strong in Mickey’s family. His daughter Geraldine is the mother of three remarkable musicians:
Eimear Howley, who plays fiddle, viola, banjo, and mandolin with the current Kilfenora Céilí Band,
Sharon Howley, also in the Kilfenora band, whose talents include cello and fiddle,
and Tara Howley, a professional touring musician who plays concertina, fiddle, uilleann pipes, and whistle — an exceptional ambassador of Clare music on the global stage.
In his later years Mickey was featured in a few episodes of Father Ted that was filmed locally.

Cahersherkin N.S. was built in 1847 by Lord Inchiquin for his tenants. The school was closed in 1941 and the local children then went to Clouna N.S. There were two houses on the school grounds for the teachers. At one time a teacher called Máiréad Flanagan lived in one and Seán McInerney, who is pictured here, lived in the other with is wife Cis, née McNamara, and their children.
