Mary ‘John Tom’ Tierney, born Mary McMahon in Kylemore in 1894, was the eldest of four siblings in a family renowned for its musicality. Like her brothers Joe ‘John Tom’ McMahon and Jacko ‘John Tom’ McMahon, Mary was raised in a household where music was an essential part of life. She played the concertina.
