John Joe McGrath (1929-2014)

John Joe McGrath of Willbrook was a gifted traditional musician, known for his flute playing and lilting—a rare and cherished vocal art form in Irish music. He lived with his brother Jimmy McGrath, and together they farmed the land they grew up on, sharing both work and music throughout their lives.

Quiet and kind-hearted, John Joe was remembered as an honest, good-natured man who contributed richly to the local musical tradition in his own unassuming way. Music was woven into everyday life for the McGrath brothers, and John Joe’s lilting and flute playing brought joy to many who heard him.

Though he never married, John Joe lived a full life rooted in music, family, and the land.
