John Joe Conway (1935-2019)
Born in Knockanedan near Kilfenora, County Clare, John Joe Conway was a beloved cattle and horse breeder, known for his sharp wit, warmth, and remarkable gift for storytelling. Featured in Turtle Bunbury’s Vanishing Ireland series and the documentary The Silver Burch, John Joe’s tales captured the spirit of rural life in Clare.
His family had deep roots in the area, with his grandfather Michael Conway settling in Knockanedan in the 19th century. His brother Martin Conway was a flute player. John Joe grew up helping on the farm, eventually taking it over in the 1950s. Though initially reluctant, he became a renowned breeder of pedigree Shorthorn cattle and was inducted into the Shorthorn Hall of Fame in 2012.
John Joe had a deep love of traditional Irish music, often playing the tin whistle and hosting céilís in his home. Though he never married, he remained close to family and friends and was a central figure in his community.
He passed away in July 2019 and is fondly remembered for his stories, music, and kind heart.
