Joe Ward (1916-1951)

Joe Ward, born in 1916 in Clogher, Kilfenora, was a talented accordion player and a much-loved figure among his family and local community. He came from the famous Ward musical family, the son of Terence Ward and Bridget O’Loughlin, and was the younger brother of Jimmy Ward, the celebrated banjo and fiddle player.

Growing up in a house full of music, Joe naturally took to playing and became especially fond of the accordion.

Those who knew Joe, including friends like Jimmy O’Donoghue, recall him as a lovely, quiet man, content to play music for the simple love of it. His gentle nature and warm playing made him a popular companion at house dances and local gatherings.

Sadly, Joe Ward died young in 1951, a loss felt deeply among his family and friends.
