JJ Conway (1935-2023)
J.J. Conway of Ballinacarra, Kilfenora, was a cherished flute player and a stalwart of traditional Irish music in County Clare. His passing in November 2023 marked the end of an era for many who knew him through his music, humor, and warm presence at céilís across Ireland.
J.J. was a long-standing member of the renowned Tulla Céilí Band, contributing his flute playing to the group’s distinctive sound. He was also associated with the Kilfenora Céilí Band in earlier years, sharing stages with notable musicians like Kitty Linnane, Tommy Peoples, Paddy ‘Organ’ Mullins, Francis Droney, and Mike Butler. His involvement in these bands showcased his dedication to preserving and promoting traditional Irish music.
Music was a family affair in the Conway household. His sister, Chris Lalor (née Conway), was also a musician, playing her own part in keeping the musical flame burning in the family and the wider community.
Beyond his musical talents, J.J. was known for his quick wit and engaging announcements during performances. His humorous asides and interactions with dancers added a unique charm to events, making him a favourite among set dancing enthusiasts. Regular attendees of the Willie Clancy Summer School’s Mill Marquee sessions fondly recall his presence and the lively atmosphere he helped create.
J.J.’s contributions extended beyond the stage. He was remembered for his kindness and encouragement to fellow musicians, always ready with a supportive word or a shared tune. His legacy lives on in the memories of those who danced to his music and in the continued vibrancy of the traditional music scene in Clare.
His funeral was held at Inchovea Church, Co. Clare, on November 10, 2023, where family, friends, and fellow musicians gathered to pay their respects to a man who had given so much to the cultural life of his community.
