Michael Howley (1910-1993)

Michael Howley was a talented fiddle and whistle player from Kilfenora, born in 1910. Deeply rooted in the musical traditions of North Clare, Michael was known locally for his skill on both instruments and for his strong connection to the music of his place and time.

He married Elizabeth Slattery, who came from a well-known musical family in the area, further strengthening the ties between two respected musical households. Together, they upheld a tradition of music that had long been at the heart of the Kilfenora community.

The legacy continues with his son Pauraic Howley, who has three remarkable musicians in the family:

Eimear Howley, who plays fiddle, viola, banjo, and mandolin with the current Kilfenora Céilí Band, Sharon Howley, also in the Kilfenora band, whose talents include cello and fiddle, and Tara Howley, a professional touring musician who plays concertina, fiddle, uilleann pipes, and whistle — an exceptional ambassador of Clare music on the global stage.
