John Clancy (1933-2010)

John Clancy was a farmer and musician whose life was steeped in music, family, and community. A member of the Golden Star Céilí Band alongside his brother Jimmy, John was known for his skill on the fiddle — his first love — and later the banjo, both of which he played with great heart and rhythm. Music was very much part of the Clancy household, and growing up, there was always a tune to be heard. His mother, Mina Galvin from Rahone, played music also, and that early influence helped spark a love of music that would last a lifetime.

John married Mary Vaughan from Ballyvaughan and together they raised nine children in a home where music continued to thrive. Alongside his work on the farm, John never strayed far from the tunes, playing at dances, sessions, and céilís with the Golden Star — a band known for its strong, stylish sound and for keeping traditional music alive in the area.
