Betty McCormack (née Lynch) (1929–1998)
Betty McCormack (née Lynch) was an exceptionally talented piano player, fondly remembered by those who knew her for her remarkable musicality. Born into a deeply musical family in Kilfenora, Betty was the daughter of John Joe Lynch, one of the founding members of the Kilfenora Céilí Band. Music ran in the family—her siblings Jerry, PJ, and Noreen all played and performed, with several joining the céilí band. Only her sister Judith did not take up an instrument.
Betty married Peter McCormack, brother of singer Mickey McCormack. Her mother was also a McCormack, creating strong musical and familial links within the Kilfenora community. Betty later moved to England with her husband, where they raised their family.
She was the mother of the much-loved singer Cathy McCormack, whose life and career were tragically cut short. Betty’s musical gift lived on through Cathy, and her legacy continues in the memories of those who experienced the warmth and joy of her music. She also has two other sons Tom and JJ.
