Anthony Neylon (1886-1950)

Anthony Neylon was born in 1886 and lived in Kilfenora, Co. Clare. A flute player, he was part of the first generation of musicians who came together in the early 20th century to form what would become the Kilfenora Céilí Band — one of Ireland’s most celebrated traditional music groups.

Anthony was not only a performer but also one of the original group involved in raising funds to support the formation of the band. His contributions helped lay the foundation for what would grow into a nationally recognised musical institution.

He played flute along with fiddle player Jim Mulqueeney, and was part of an early céilí group that included:

Michael Slattery, Austin Tierney, Jamesie Tierney, John Joe Lynch, and Jim Mulqueeney on fiddles

Bridget McGrath and Paddy Byrt on concertinas

Molly Connole on piano

Together, they created a lively, driving sound that reflected the strong dance tradition of North Clare and shaped the musical identity of the Kilfenora band in its formative years.

Anthony Neylon passed away in 1950.
