Andrew O’Donoghue (1897-1986)

Andrew O’Donoghue was born in January 1897 in Lickeen, Kilfenora, Co. Clare. A farmer, musician, and highly respected local figure, he was known for his intelligence, quiet strength, and deep love of both his country and the land around him.

He was deeply involved in Ireland’s struggle for independence and became Commandant of the 5th Battalion, Mid Clare Brigade during the War of Independence. Though he was involved in many key actions of the time, Andrew rarely spoke of his military years in later life, choosing instead a life of quiet reflection and strong family ties. Andrew also played the concertina, and though he played less in his later years.

Outside of his public and musical life, Andrew was an avid outdoorsman. He was a passionate fisherman and could often be found out on Lickeen Lake in his boat, where he loved nothing more than a day spent casting lines. He also had a great love of fowling, and was a founding member of the Kilfenora Gun Club, where he remained an active and respected member for many years.
